Goal 1: Reduce OCD Interference and Increase Daily Functioning
- Client will reduce the frequency and duration of obsessive-compulsive symptoms that interfere with daily functioning.
- Patient will increase participation in work, school, relationships, self-care, and other daily responsibilities despite the presence of OCD symptoms.
- Client will reduce avoidance and behavioral patterns that limit engagement in meaningful activities due to obsessive-compulsive concerns.
- Patient will improve overall functioning by reducing the amount of time and energy devoted to obsessions, compulsions, and related avoidance.
Goal 2: Increase Ability to Tolerate Uncertainty and Distress
- Client will increase ability to tolerate uncertainty, intrusive thoughts, and emotional distress without engaging in compulsive responses.
- Patient will develop greater willingness to experience discomfort without attempting to eliminate, neutralize, or resolve it.
- Client will increase ability to allow intrusive thoughts, bodily sensations, and uncomfortable emotions to occur without assigning excessive meaning or threat to them.
- Patient will strengthen distress tolerance and acceptance of uncertainty while reducing reliance on certainty-seeking behaviors.
Goal 3: Reduce Compulsive and Reassurance-Seeking Responses
- Client will reduce behavioral and mental compulsions that maintain obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
- Patient will decrease reliance on reassurance seeking, checking, rumination, reviewing, researching, and other certainty-seeking behaviors.
- Client will increase ability to respond to obsessive thoughts without engaging in rituals or neutralizing behaviors.
- Patient will strengthen response-prevention skills and increase ability to resist compulsive behaviors despite experiencing distress or uncertainty.
Goal 4: Increase Values-Consistent Behavior
- Client will increase engagement in personally meaningful activities that have been limited by obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
- Patient will increase participation in relationships, responsibilities, recreation, work, school, and other valued areas of life despite the presence of OCD symptoms.
- Client will reduce avoidance and behavioral restrictions that interfere with living consistently with identified personal values.
- Patient will strengthen ability to prioritize meaningful life activities rather than organizing behavior primarily around avoidance of OCD-related distress.
Goal 5: Build Confidence in Responding to OCD Without Seeking Certainty
- Client will increase confidence in managing obsessive thoughts and uncertainty without relying on reassurance or external validation.
- Patient will strengthen independent coping and decision-making skills while reducing reliance on compulsive certainty-seeking.
- Client will increase ability to make decisions and move forward without requiring complete certainty or resolution of intrusive doubts.
- Patient will develop greater confidence in allowing unanswered questions, uncertainty, and uncomfortable possibilities without engaging in compulsive attempts to resolve them.
