Purpose 🎯
Reduce overwhelm by identifying the smallest possible first step toward a larger goal.
Let’s Talk About It 🗣️
Ask the client about a goal that currently feels overwhelming.
Instead of focusing on the finished goal, work backward until you identify a first step that feels almost impossible to fail.
Examples:
- Open the laptop.
- Put on walking shoes.
- Place one dish in the sink.
Celebrate the first step rather than the completed project.
If the Conversation Gets Stuck 💡
- What’s making this feel so big?
- Could we make the first step even smaller?
- What could you realistically do in two minutes?
Telehealth / Whiteboard Version 🁢
Draw a row of dominoes leading to the final goal. Label each domino with one increasingly larger step, emphasizing that momentum begins with the first one.
Why This Works 🌱
Large goals often create paralysis. Shrinking them into manageable actions reduces activation energy and makes starting feel achievable.
Clinical Pearl 🧠
If the client still hesitates, the first step is probably too large. Keep shrinking it until they respond, “Yeah, I could do that.”
Documentation Language 📝
