Purpose 🎯
Help clients organize significant experiences and identify changes in emotions, relationships, coping, and sense of self over time without requiring detailed trauma processing.
Let’s Talk About It 🗣️
Create a timeline divided into meaningful periods:
Before
- What was life like before the experience?
- What felt important to you?
- What strengths or supports did you have?
During
- What changed for you?
- What did you need at that time?
- How did you cope?
After
- What changed in how you viewed yourself or others?
- What are you still carrying?
- What has helped you move forward?
Explore:
- “What parts of you have remained strong?”
- “What did you learn about yourself through this?”
- “What would you like to be different moving forward?”
If the Conversation Gets Stuck 💡
The client does not need to describe traumatic events in detail. Focus on broad periods, changes, emotions, coping, relationships, and strengths.
Telehealth / Whiteboard Version 💻
Create a horizontal timeline with three or more sections and allow the client to add brief words, symbols, or milestones rather than detailed descriptions.
Why This Works 🌱
Creating a structured timeline can help clients recognize how experiences have influenced them while also identifying resilience, strengths, and areas of growth.
Clinical Pearl 🧠
Avoid turning the activity into an unstructured trauma narrative. Prioritize the client's readiness and emotional stability, and return to grounding when needed.
Documentation Language 📝
Client explored significant life experiences and their impact on emotional functioning, relationships, coping, and sense of self while identifying personal strengths and areas of growth.
