Goal 1: Increase Emotional Safety and Trauma Symptom Understanding
Client Goal:
βI want to better understand my reactions and feel more in control when I become overwhelmed.β
Clinical Focus:
Support the client in developing awareness of trauma responses, identifying triggers, and increasing understanding of how trauma impacts emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.
Goal 2: Improve Emotional Regulation and Coping Skills
Client Goal:
βI want to learn ways to manage my emotions when I feel triggered or stressed.β
Clinical Focus:
Develop skills to identify emotional activation, regulate nervous system responses, and utilize healthy coping strategies during periods of distress.
Goal 3: Increase Sense of Safety and Trust
Client Goal:
βI want to feel safer in myself and my relationships.β
Clinical Focus:
Support development of internal safety, healthy boundaries, trust-building, and improved interpersonal functioning.
Goal 4: Reduce Avoidance and Increase Healthy Engagement
Client Goal:
βI want to stop avoiding things that remind me of difficult experiences and start moving forward.β
Clinical Focus:
Help clients identify avoidance patterns, increase tolerance for difficult emotions, and reconnect with meaningful activities and relationships.
Goal 5: Develop a More Balanced Self-Perception
Client Goal:
βI want to stop blaming myself and build a healthier view of who I am.β
Clinical Focus:
Address trauma related shame, guilt, negative beliefs, and self-concept while strengthening self-compassion and resilience.
Trauma Goals
- Patient will increase understanding of trauma-related responses and develop skills to manage emotional activation, triggers, and distress in a safe and effective manner.
- Patient will improve emotional regulation and coping by practicing grounding, stabilization, and self-soothing strategies when experiencing trauma-related symptoms.
- Patient will strengthen sense of safety, self-compassion, and healthy boundaries in order to improve daily functioning and interpersonal relationships.
Clinical Note
Trauma treatment goals should be individualized based on the clientβs current presentation, readiness, safety, and treatment stage. Early trauma work often focuses on stabilization and skill development before deeper trauma processing.
