Grief Objectives ποΈ
Objectives should be measurable, clinically realistic, individualized to the clientβs presentation, and generally achievable within approximately 90 days.
Goal 1: Process and Integrate the Loss
Objective:
Client will identify and process at least three emotional, cognitive, behavioral, or relational responses associated with the loss during therapy over the next 90 days.
Measurement Tools (when appropriate):
- Client self report
- Clinical observation
- Grief symptom tracking
- Session-based emotional ratings
Goal 2: Improve Emotional Regulation and Coping
Objective:
Client will learn and practice at least three coping or emotional regulation strategies to manage grief-related distress and support continued daily functioning within the next 90 days.
Measurement Tools (when appropriate):
- Client self report
- SUDS or other subjective distress ratings
- Coping strategy tracking
- Clinical observation
Goal 3: Rebuild Meaning, Identity, and Daily Life
Objective:
Client will identify at least three meaningful activities, roles, values, or routines and gradually increase engagement in selected areas within the next 90 days.
Measurement Tools (when appropriate):
- Activity tracking
- Functional improvement tracking
- Client self report
- Values-based goal tracking
Goal 4: Strengthen Relationships and Support
Objective:
Client will identify at least two appropriate sources of interpersonal support and practice at least two communication, boundary-setting, or support-seeking skills within the next 90 days.
Measurement Tools (when appropriate):
- Client self report
- Relationship functioning discussions
- Support utilization tracking
- Clinical observation
Goal 5: Adapt to the Loss and Support Ongoing Recovery
Objective:
Client will identify and implement at least three strategies that support adaptation to the loss while maintaining engagement in meaningful areas of life within the next 90 days.
Measurement Tools (when appropriate):
- Client self report
- Functional improvement tracking
- Activity engagement tracking
- Clinical observation
Grief Objectives
- Patient will identify and process grief-related emotional, cognitive, behavioral, or relational responses associated with the loss during therapy.
- Patient will practice coping and emotional regulation strategies to manage grief-related distress and support continued daily functioning.
- Patient will increase engagement in meaningful activities, relationships, roles, values, or routines while adapting to the loss.
Clinical Note
Grief objectives should be individualized based on the nature of the loss, cultural context, developmental factors, current functioning, safety, and clinical presentation. Progress should not be defined solely by reduced sadness or reduced expression of grief.
