OCD Goals 🎯
Goal 1: Reduce OCD Interference and Increase Daily Functioning
Client Goal:
“I want OCD to take up less of my time and let me get back to my life.”
Clinical Focus:
Reduce the functional impact of obsessions, compulsions, and avoidance while increasing participation in meaningful daily activities.
Goal 2: Increase Ability to Tolerate Uncertainty and Distress
Client Goal:
“I want to be able to have uncomfortable thoughts without needing to figure them out or make them go away.”
Clinical Focus:
Increase willingness to experience uncertainty, intrusive thoughts, bodily sensations, and emotional discomfort without relying on compulsions or avoidance.
Goal 3: Reduce Compulsive and Reassurance-Seeking Responses
Client Goal:
“I want to stop feeling like I have to check, ask, or mentally review everything.”
Clinical Focus:
Identify and reduce behavioral and mental compulsions, reassurance seeking, rumination, checking, and other neutralizing strategies that maintain the OCD cycle.
Goal 4: Increase Values-Consistent Behavior
Client Goal:
“I want to spend more time doing the things that matter to me instead of organizing my life around OCD.”
Clinical Focus:
Reconnect the client with relationships, responsibilities, recreation, work, school, and other personally meaningful activities that have been restricted by OCD.
Goal 5: Build Confidence in Responding to OCD Without Seeking Certainty
Client Goal:
“I want to trust myself to handle uncertainty without needing someone else to tell me that everything is okay.”
Clinical Focus:
Strengthen independent coping, response prevention, flexible decision-making, and the ability to allow unanswered questions without compulsive resolution.
Clinical Note
OCD treatment goals should not be framed as eliminating every intrusive thought or guaranteeing that feared outcomes will never occur. Treatment is generally better aligned with reducing compulsive responding and avoidance, increasing uncertainty tolerance, and improving meaningful functioning.
Goals should be individualized to the client's presentation, developmental level, values, treatment readiness, and degree of impairment.
OCD Goals
- Client will reduce the frequency, intensity, and functional impact of obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
- Patient will increase ability to tolerate distress, uncertainty, and intrusive thoughts without relying on compulsive behaviors or avoidance.
- Client will improve daily functioning and quality of life through development of adaptive coping strategies and reduction of obsessive-compulsive patterns.
